Markle Fisheries
We are Markle Fisheries are offering fly-fishing to the people in Scotland. You can catch top quality trout on three beautifully situated lochs set in lovely East Lothian countryside. The ‘Mackle & the ‘Monastery’ are fly fishing only lochs and the ‘Kinloch’ is bait and fly water. The ‘Markle’ extends to 5.5 acres, the ‘Monastery’ is 2 acres and the Kinloch extends to 2.5 acres – so as you can see theres room for everyone and plenty of areas to try and catch the biggest fish!
The complex has been previously awarded a ‘2 star visitor attraction’ from the Scottish Tourist Board, and we are members of the Association of Scottish Stillwater Fisheries (ASSF), which means we are fully insuranced.
Our lochs are welcome to experienced fishers and complete beginners. We have even seen young children take up the hobbie and have been excited when their line pulls with a fish tugging on the end. We must say however that children under 16 should be supervised at all times. The fishery is open all year round, seven days a week and is open from 8am till dusk. Night-time sessions are available though but by arrangement only within the summer months only.
The two fly fishing lochs, Markle and the Monastery, are stocked daily with the best quality trout and there are many species swimming within the water such as: rainbow, brown, blue, tiger, gold and brook. Whereas the bait/coarse fishing loch is not only stocked with trout but also a variety of coarse fish too including: carp, rudd, tench and crucian carp. Take your pick! Theres many species to choose from!
We have had some amazing records over the years gaining us a well-earned reputation for specimen trout that we can be proud of! In the Bait Pond there have been some impressive records such as: a Rainbow caught at 16lbs 4oz and a Carp weighing in at 18lbs 8oz! In the fly fishing lochs records include: a Rainbow at 20lbs 14oz, a Brown at 18lbs 8oz, a Blue at 11lbs 2oz, a Tiger at 10lbs 8oz, a Gold at 10lbs 2oz, and a Brook at 5lbs 1oz – WOW! There are definately some BIG fishes in there!
On site we have an extremely comfortable chalet type fishing lodge with a variety of useful facilities including our tackle shop where you can get rods, reels, lines, flies clothing etc by number of quality manufacturers such as: Greys, Scierra, Leeda, Cortland, Stonefly and Ron Thomson. We also offer rod hire and tuition, a nice refreshing drink (both hot and cold drinks available) and sweets and crisps. Ladies and gents toilets are open to the public and we have a large car park which is adjacent to all three lochs.
On an important note, we must say that ‘catch and release’ is with barbless hooks only and fish must not be lifted out of the water. Nets should be knotless too.

For the ‘Fly Fishing’ lochs:
GBP19.00 – 8 hours fishing – 3 fish limit then C+R
GBP14.00 – 4 hours fishing – 2 fish limit then C+R
GBP11.00 – 8 hours fishing – catch & release only
GBP 8.50 – 4 hours fishing – catch & release only
For the ‘Bait & Coarse’ Loch:
GBP16.00 – 5 trout limit – no catch and release.
GBP13.00 – 4 trout limit – no catch and release
GBP10.00 – 3 trout limit – no catch and release.
Our ‘Course’:
GBP 6.50 per day – single rod and barbless hooks only.
All coarse fish must be returned safely to the water.
Group bookings for clubs and individuals are more than welcome and there are discounts available dependent upon the numbers in your group. Discounts are offered to senior citizens, disabled and children under sixteen too.
